Compliance Auditing Return
Holmes Environmental Ltd have been engaged by Manchester-based AEC Ltd. to form part of a team conducting audits of environmental, health, and safety activities for a leading US multinational organisation at two of their manufacturing facilities located in Manchester and Worcester. Rob Holmes will act as the auditor knowledgeable in environmental regulations. The multinational’s audit manager will participate in and lead the audits to achieve an audit format and final report consistent with corporate standards. One of the facilities was previously audited in 2007.

EMS Design & Maintenance
The Company has been awarded a contract to design and support the implementation of a certifiable EMS at a Hampshire based health care company which is a world leader in the field of in vitro diagnostics. The environmental programme is currently under development.
EMS development support is being provided by WISenvironmental to a business service centre in the Isle of Wight which provides and administers specialist insurance products to the retail, manufacturing, banking and telecommunications industries.
WISenvironmental is also currently leading the design and development of a certifiable EMS for the boiler-cleaning business KRR (UK) Ltd.

Certification Audits
The time spent by Principal Rob Holmes on-site carrying out ISO14001 EMS certification audits and compliance audits topped 400 hours in the 2009 to April 2010 period. The impact of the global recession on the UK economy may explain the 20% fall in auditing hours recorded in the latest period compared with statistics from 2008.

UNEP Oil-Field Remediation Research
WISenvironmental recently participated in the United Nations Environment Programme programme to independently assess the environmental impact of oil-field contamination in the Ogoni Region of south-west Nigeria. The over-riding objective of WISenvironmental’s task was to identify the range of possible full-scale remediation technologies available commercially for oil-contaminated soils and sediments and to present their indicative costs, resource requirements, operational footprint and possible output specifications. Site visits were carried out at the invitation of the operators by the project team process engineers to three locations in Belgium to witness and assess the suitability of soil washing, bioremediation and thermal desorption operations.

Support in Expansion of EMS Scope
The Company has been invited by W&S Recycling to provide on-going support in adding up to 6 additional waste recycling centres to the scope of the certified EMS operating at Millhams Recycling Centre in Bournemouth since summer 2008.

WISenvironmental Venture Goes Ahead
Rob Holmes has accepted a Principal role at WISenvironmental a process technology and environmental consultancy which has provided practical cost-effective solutions on a wide range of environmental management and waste processing projects for more than 15 years. The company recently relocated to new offices at Loseley Park south of Guildford in autumn 2009. The company launched a new website www.wisenvironmental.co.uk and published a Newsletter in spring 2010.

EMS Design Support
The Company has been awarded a contract to ‘kick-start’ the design and implementation of a certifiable EMS within a Hampshire based health care company which is a world leader in the field of in vitro diagnostics. The organisation plans to invite an accredited certification body to certify the EMS before early summer 2010.

BREEAM Registered Assessor
Director Rob Holmes was added to the list of registered assessors under the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Industrial Scheme 2008. The registration was awarded after successful completion of training, a written examination and a test assessment. He will carry out a post-construction BREEAM assessment on the ‘as built’ office conversion of VWIS at Unit 7, Loseley Park leading hopefully to the award of a BREEAM certificate (see article ‘VWIS Venture Goes Ahead’ elsewhere in News).

Compliance Assurance Audit Support, Ireland
Acted on behalf of a leading global environmental consulting group as an environmental expert in 4 recent EHS Compliance Assurance audits of manufacturing plants in Ireland. The plants represented the pharmaceuticals, healthcare and food manufacturing sectors. Audits were in-depth, followed Evaluation Work Plans and lasted up to 5 days on each site.

Company Director Approved as AJA Lead Auditor
Rob Holmes has been approved as a Lead Auditor for EMS with Bristol-based UKAS accredited Certification Body AJA Registrars Ltd. AS part of AJA’s competence assessment he took part in a witnessed 2-day ISO 14001:2004 Stage 2 (Initial) Audit of a regional construction firm and 3 active construction sites in East Anglia in May 2009.
